Climbing Nyiragongo Volcano

Dernière mise à jour : 2 déc. 2022

There may be more than 10 Tips for Climbing Mount Nyiragongo but let me do 2 for you first and more will come in future posts; To climb a mountain that can take you a whole day or even an hour, I'm not going to lie to you, Mount Nyiragongo is far from a healthy walk and is not a summit to be taken for fun: we talk about more than 3000 meters of elevation in less than 10 hours in a less hostile and non-dangerous environment after having followed the various advice of Tourist Guides such as those of Congo Tourism Gate and others.

I therefore give you all my advice (some of which I would have liked to have known before!) to put the odds on your side and be one of the people who manage to climb to the mythical summit.

1/ Good physical preparation to work on your heart rate because The Nyiragongo volcano trek is divided into five sections, with a 15-minute break at each stop. Hikers begin the ascent at Kibati Ranger Post at an altitude of 1870m and reach the summit at 3470m, with a 6.5km hike each way. The average duration of the ascent is between 4 and 6 hours, and the descent from the volcano takes about 4 hours.

2/ Less heavy equipment, comfortable and quality equipment because it is essential to have: Several layers of warm, breathable clothing. During the ascent, you can go from a temperature of 30°C in the valley to 1°C at the top, sometimes even colder with the gusts of wind. Thus, it is necessary to favor the onion technique with several layers which will be accumulated as the climb progresses.

Quality technical equipment: not only will you entrust your life to it, but it will also greatly facilitate your ascent. A light bag that contains only the essentials: weight is enemy number one in mountaineering. A waterproof inside will serve you in case of rain and a sleeping bag because you will spend the night at the top where the temperature can drop to less than 1°

For the moment the hike is closed following the recent eruption
